Statistical Definitions

These definitions are the basis on which statistics for the game of FANTASYRUGBY.com are accumulated. What constitutes each statistic is defined by our panel of experts who also view each game and compile the statistics. We guarantee accuracy in the compilation of these statistics but there may be variations from your assessment because of judgement calls on some sequences.

Points are earned each week based on the players owned and how they perform on field as measured using the following definitions.

Try

A ball touched down by the offensive player in the offensive goal area and awarded a try by the referee.
(Fantasy Value: 15 pts)

Penalty Kick
A successful kick for goal after an awarded penalty by the referee.
(Fantasy Value: 3 pts)

Conversion
A successful kick for goal after an awarded try.
(Fantasy Value: 5 pts)

Drop Goal

A successful drop kick for goal from general play.
(Fantasy Value: 6 pts)

Missed Kick
Any unsuccessful kick for goal - penalty, conversion or drop kick. The exception is that due to an infringement by the defending team a second kick is awarded in the same phase of play.
(Fantasy Value: -3 pts)

Beat Defender
Any time a ball carrier advances the ball past an established defender he will be credited with 3 MR Points. This statistic may occur in one of three ways. First, a ball carrier will be rewarded if he breaks the advantage line with the ball whether he is touched by the defence or not. This is simply a reward for running good lines and getting through the first line of defence. Second, a ball carrier will be rewarded if he makes a move with the ball and beats a defender in the open field, again whether he is touched or not. Finally, any time a ball carrier breaks through a tackler's grasp and continues to advance the ball he will be rewarded. It should be noted that a ball carrier can accumulate multiple BD's on a single run and obviously a team can accumulate multiple BD's on a single phase using more than one runner..
(Fantasy Value: 3 pts)

Tackle

A tackle results when the defender makes contact with the ball carrier and either puts him on the ground, into touch or forces him, through the contact, to relinquish possession of the ball. A judgement decision exists in the case of an offensive player unloading a pass as contact is made. If the defensive contact causes a bad pass or forces the ball carrier to unload a pass then the tackle is awarded. If it is judged the ball carrier is making the pass irrespective of the contact then no tackle is awarded.

Also the fantasy value may be split between two tacklers if there is simultaneous contact on the ball carrier or if a second tackler completes a tackle he will not be awarded any value for his part.
(Fantasy Value: 3 pts)

Assist
An assist will be awarded to any player who assists the try scorer with the last pass or kick which puts the try scorer in for a try. A pushover try is not considered an assisted try. Also, the last pass may not be the key pass in a try movement but for purposes of consistency and reducing the amount of judgement in statistical compilation only the last pass or kick just before a try constitutes an assist.
(Fantasy Value: 6 pts)

Lineout
A "take" is awarded for the successful completion of a lineout throw where one receiving player is responsible for his team recovering the ball. This player may be from either team. A catch is not necessary to be awarded a take but control of the ball is a requirement.
(Fantasy Value: 2 pts)

Lineout Throw: Successful
Value is awarded to the throwing player when, as a result of his throw the offensive team gains immediate control of the ball.
(Fantasy Value: 1 pts)

Turnover Won (Aggressive defence won possession)
A defensive player is judged responsible for causing a turnover when as a result of his action the offensive team losses possession of the ball to the defensive team. (Example: an intercept, a tackle causing a knock-on, a stolen ball from ruck or maul where the defensive player causing the turnover can be identified, a defensive take in a lineout, a tackle forcing the ball carrier into touch, a charged kick, a tackler who turns the ball carrier in the tackle plus other based on statisticians judgement).
(Fantasy Value: 5 pts)

Turnover Lost (Poor play gave possession away)
When responsibility for the loss of possession by the offensive team can be directly attributed to the actions of a single offensive player then a turnover will be charged. (Example: Knock on, lost kicks into touch, lost passes - intercepted or forward, ball carrier turned in the tackle plus other scenarios. There are times when a loss of possession can not or should not be attributed to a player. For instance, a ball presented to the back of a ruck which is then lost in general play will not result in a charged to the tackled player. A decision by an isolated play to take the ball into touch for security reasons will not be assessed a turnover. Other scenarios will be judged on an individual basis.
(Fantasy Value: -3 pts)

Charged Penalty

Any penalty which is charged to a single player identified by the referee. If advantage is played by the referee and the penalty is not given then the offending player is not charged.
(Fantasy Value: -2 pts)
